The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has appointed Dwayne Bravo as their bowling consultant for T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the Caribbean and the USA. This strategic move aims to leverage Bravo’s extensive experience and skills to enhance Afghanistan’s performance in the tournament.
The Afghan cricket team has already arrived in St Kitts and Nevis for their ten-day preparatory camp, where Bravo will join them. Bravo, a former West Indies all-rounder and two-time T20 World Cup winner, brings a wealth of experience. He retired from international cricket after the 2021 T20 World Cup but continues to play in various T20 leagues globally. Earlier this year, he played for MI Emirates in the ILT20, leading them to victory.
With 625 wickets in 573 T20 games, Bravo is the leading wicket-taker in T20 cricket and currently serves as the bowling coach for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. His presence in the Afghan camp is expected to significantly benefit the team’s bowling unit.
Afghanistan will kick off their preparations with warm-up matches against Oman on May 29 and Scotland on May 31. Placed in Group C, Afghanistan will face formidable opponents including West Indies, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Uganda. Their first World Cup match is scheduled against Uganda on June 4 in Providence, Guyana.
Key players in the Afghan squad include Rashid Khan, Ibrahim Zadran, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, all of whom are expected to play pivotal roles in the tournament. The detailed schedule of Afghanistan’s matches is as follows:
- June 4: Afghanistan vs Uganda in Guyana
- June 8: Afghanistan vs New Zealand in Guyana
- June 14: Afghanistan vs Papua New Guinea in Tarouba
- June 18: Afghanistan vs West Indies in Saint Lucia
Additionally, Kieron Pollard, another former West Indies player, will be serving as England’s assistant coach for the tournament.
The ACB is optimistic that Bravo’s appointment will provide valuable insights and improvements to their bowling attack, enhancing their competitiveness in the World Cup. This collaboration is seen as a critical step towards achieving success in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
