In a thrilling culmination to the IPL 2024 season, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinched their third IPL title, defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets in a dominant performance. The final, held at a packed stadium, saw SRH opting to bat first after winning the toss. However, their decision quickly backfired as KKR’s bowlers delivered a masterclass in pressure bowling, restricting SRH to a meager total of 113 runs. No SRH batter managed to score more than 25 runs, highlighting KKR’s relentless attack.
In response, KKR’s chase was efficient and composed, despite losing Sunil Narine early in the second over. The match-winning partnership came from Venkatesh Iyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who together added 92 runs for the second wicket. Iyer was particularly impressive, scoring an unbeaten 52 off just 26 balls, steering KKR to victory with ease.
The victory not only marked KKR’s third IPL triumph but also brought an end to a highly competitive season. KKR walked away with the winners’ prize money of INR 20 crore, while the runners-up, SRH, earned INR 12.5 crore from the total prize purse of INR 46.5 crore.
Individual accolades were also a highlight of the season. Nitish Reddy was named Emerging Player of the Year, receiving a prize of 10 Lakh. Virat Kohli, with 741 runs, won the Orange Cap and a prize of 10 Lakh, while Harshal Patel’s 24 wickets earned him the Purple Cap and a similar prize. Jake Fraser McGurk’s exceptional strike rate of 234.4 made him the Super Striker of the Season. Sunil Narine, showcasing his all-round brilliance, was named the Most Valuable Player and Ultimate Fantasy Player of the Season, winning 10 Lakh for each title.
