In a thrilling encounter at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup held in Dubai on October 15, 2024, the West Indies Women secured a remarkable six-wicket victory over England Women, qualifying for the semifinals. Chasing a target of 142, the West Indies showcased their batting prowess, reaching 144 for 4 in just 18 overs, with 12 balls to spare.

England batted first after losing the toss and struggled to find momentum, finishing their innings at 141 for 7. Nat Sciver-Brunt was the standout performer for the English side, scoring a resilient 57 off 50 balls, featuring five boundaries. However, England’s innings lacked partnerships, as their top order faltered.

Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge made modest contributions with scores of 14 and 16, respectively. A key moment was Heather Knight’s unfortunate retirement hurt after scoring 21 runs, which further hampered England’s progress. They managed to post a competitive total but fell short of a dominant performance, primarily due to the excellent bowling from the West Indies, particularly from Afy Fletcher, who took 3 wickets for 21 runs.

The West Indies began their chase with intent, and openers Qiana Joseph and Hayley Matthews put on a stellar show. Matthews scored 50 runs off 38 balls, while Joseph was the star of the match, scoring 52 runs off just 38 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes. The duo built a solid foundation, reaching 100 runs for the first wicket before both fell in quick succession, leaving the team at 102 for 2. Despite a brief collapse, where they lost two quick wickets, Deandra Dottin and Aaliyah Alleyne ensured a steady finish to the innings.

Qiana Joseph’s stellar performance earned her the Player of the Match award, while Hayley Matthews was recognized for her impactful all-round performance throughout the tournament. The West Indies’ victory not only secured their place in the semifinals but also highlighted their strong batting lineup and bowling depth.

With this win, the West Indies Women continue their campaign in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with confidence, looking to build on this momentum as they aim for the coveted title.
