Plus Point for Pakistan, Key New Zealand Player Ruled Out of ODI Series

In a major blow to New Zealand ODI series against Pakistan, Tom Latham has been out after hurting his hand in a training accident. The x-ray confirmation has resulted in an immediate reshuffle of the squad, with Michael Bracewell being made captain and Henry Nicholls getting a call-up.

Latham, who was due to captain the side while Mitchell Santner will be busy in the IPL commitment, bore the blow last week, leaving behind a leadership crisis at the dawn of the series. Bracewell, who is already captain for the side during the recent T20I series, will henceforth do duty in the 50-over tournament as well.

New Zealand Make a Couple of Changes for Pakistan ODI Series

The team has made further changes apart from the absence of Latham. Mitch Hay will replace wicketkeeping, providing stability behind the wickets. In addition, Will Young will leave the team after the first match in Napier to prepare for the arrival of his first child. In place of the vacancy, 23-year-old uncapped batter Rhys Mariu has been brought in on cover with a notable first-class average of 61.73.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead acknowledged the squad’s evolving dynamics, emphasizing adaptability. “We’ve had to be flexible throughout this tour due to various player unavailabilities,” Stead said. “While it’s unfortunate to lose Tom right before the series, it opens doors for others. We’re excited to welcome Rhys into the setup for the first time and have Henry back in the mix.”

Nicholls’ return comes after a three-month layoff due to injury, and his recent form has impressed selectors. “Henry’s experience and skill set will be a valuable addition,” Stead said.

With Kane Williamson ruling himself out of the series and the uncapped pair of Muhammad Abbas and Nick Kelly already included in the squad, the Black Caps are further probing their depth ahead of future international matches. New Zealand had just swept the T20I portion of the tour with a comprehensive 4-1 series win over Pakistan.

While the team operates through these last-minute adjustments, Stead is positive about the leadership of Bracewell. “Michael has performed wonderfully so far, and we have faith in him leading the team further.”

In the meantime, the team sends its best regards to Young and his wife, Elise, as they get ready for this milestone in their lives.
