Warriors set the tone with Grimmond’s maiden fifty
The second clash of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League 2025 in Providence served up another thriller as Guyana Amazon Warriors Women posted a competitive 154/4 in their 20 overs. Captain Shemaine Campbelle’s side relied on a classy innings from young Realeanna Grimmond, who carved out her maiden WCPL half-century.
Grimmond’s 61 off 57 balls, studded with five boundaries and a six, became the tournament’s first fifty this season. She was ably supported by Amy Hunter (34 off 26) and lower-order cameos, but the Royals’ bowlers kept a lid on the scoring. Aaliyah Alleyne (2/27) and Sheneta Grimmond (1/19) were particularly effective at the death, denying the Warriors a final flourish.
Royals steady chase before Henry explodes
In pursuit of a DLS-adjusted target of 137 from 18 overs due to a floodlight failure, the Barbados Royals Women began with intent. Openers Chamari Athapaththu (29 off 24) and Qiana Joseph (22 off 22) gave them momentum, followed by Georgia Redmayne’s composed 33 off 29 to anchor the middle.
At 87/3 in the 13th over, the contest looked balanced. Courtney Webb (6) had just fallen to Laura Harris, and the Warriors sensed an opening. But skipper Chinelle Henry changed the game with a breathtaking cameo.
Henry blasted 37 from just 19 balls*, smashing two fours and four towering sixes. Her counterattack left the Warriors reeling, as she powered the Royals home in 17.2 overs, sealing a seven-wicket win with four balls remaining.
Implications on the table
The victory was more than just two points. The Royals leapfrogged the Warriors into top spot on net run rate (NRR) while still holding a game in hand. With all sides looking closely matched so far, early wins like this could prove decisive in the race to the WCPL final.
For the Warriors, Grimmond’s fifty was a bright spark, but failure to contain Henry in the death overs proved costly.
