Melbourne Renegades Women secured a dramatic four-wicket victory over Hobart Hurricanes Women in the ninth match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2026–27 at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, on November 4. Sophie Molineux claimed 4/22, while Hayley Matthews struck a crucial 59 as the Renegades chased 155 with just one delivery remaining.
Hobart Hurricanes posted 154/7 after captain Nicola Carey scored 62 and Chinelle Henry added a rapid 36. Melbourne appeared comfortable at 101/1 during the chase, but a middle-order collapse brought the Hurricanes back into contention before Deandra Dottin and Nicole Faltum guided the visitors to 155/6 in 19.5 overs.
Nicola Carey Leads Hurricanes’ Recovery After Early Wickets
After Melbourne Renegades elected to field first, Molineux immediately put Hobart under pressure by dismissing Lizelle Lee for six and Rachel Trenaman for a duck in the second over.
Chamari Athapaththu struggled to accelerate, scoring nine from 18 balls before falling to Georgia Wareham. The Hurricanes were reduced to 37/3 after seven overs.
Carey anchored the recovery with an attacking 62 from 43 deliveries, including 10 boundaries. She reached her half-century from 37 balls and helped Hobart rebuild through the middle overs.
Heather Graham contributed nine, while Maddy Green added 17 before becoming Molineux’s fourth victim.
Henry then provided a valuable late acceleration, smashing 36 from just 18 balls, including seven fours, to lift the Hurricanes towards a competitive total.
Hobart eventually finished on 154/7 from 20 overs.
Molineux was the standout bowler, returning 4/22 from four overs, while Wareham claimed 1/23 and Hayley Matthews took 1/39.
Hayley Matthews Puts Renegades in Control
Melbourne Renegades began their chase positively despite losing Olivia Porter for 14 in the fourth over.
Matthews and Courtney Webb established a strong second-wicket partnership, adding 69 runs to take Melbourne to 101/2 in the 13th over.
Matthews dominated the partnership, reaching her half-century from 33 deliveries and striking eight boundaries during her 59 from 44 balls.
Webb provided important support with 29 from 25 deliveries.
At 101/1 after 12 overs, the Renegades appeared well positioned to complete a comfortable chase. However, Carey dismissed Webb, and Molly Strano removed Molineux for six.
Graham then bowled Matthews in the 15th over, reducing Melbourne to 110/4 and shifting the momentum back towards Hobart.
Dottin and Faltum Hold Their Nerve in Final Over
Georgia Wareham kept Melbourne’s chase moving with 17 from 11 balls, but Carey dismissed her in the 17th over.
Graham then removed Chloe Tryon for four, leaving the Renegades at 138/6 after 17.5 overs, needing 17 runs from 13 deliveries.
With the match finely balanced, Deandra Dottin and Nicole Faltum combined to complete the chase.
Dottin struck two boundaries during her unbeaten 15 from 11 balls, while Faltum remained not out on nine from 11 deliveries.
Their unbroken 17-run partnership carried Melbourne to 155/6 in 19.5 overs, sealing a four-wicket victory with one ball remaining.
Graham was Hobart’s leading bowler with 3/24, while Carey returned 2/30.
Molineux received the Player of the Match award for her decisive four-wicket spell, which restricted Hobart’s batting lineup and ultimately proved crucial to Melbourne’s victory.
The result also gave Melbourne Renegades their first win of the WBBL 2026–27 season after defeats against Sydney Thunder and Perth Scorchers.
