The second encounter delivered a high-scoring contest as Melbourne Stars posted an imposing 192/4, thanks to a commanding 71 from captain Meg Lanning and a powerful 57 from Annabel Sutherland. Hobart Hurricanes responded aggressively through Lizelle Lee’s entertaining half-century, but the Stars maintained control during the closing stages to secure an 18-run victory. Hayley Matthews Gives Melbourne Renegades a Promising Start
After Sydney Thunder captain Phoebe Litchfield elected to field first, Melbourne Renegades began cautiously before Hayley Matthews and Courtney Webb established a useful opening partnership.
The pair added 56 runs for the first wicket, with Matthews playing the more aggressive role. The West Indies all-rounder struck six boundaries and a six during her 45 from 30 deliveries, providing the Renegades with much-needed momentum.
Webb contributed 22 from 24 balls, including three fours, before Hannah Darlington provided Sydney Thunder with their first breakthrough in the eighth over.
Matthews continued to attack but fell shortly after the halfway stage, caught by Lauren Bell off Darlington with the Renegades on 76/2 in the 11th over.
Her dismissal proved a significant turning point, as Melbourne struggled to maintain the scoring rate against Thunder’s disciplined bowling attack.
Georgia Voll’s Four-Wicket Spell Changes the Match
Georgia Voll produced the defining bowling performance of the opening encounter, dismantling the Renegades’ middle order with an outstanding four-wicket haul.
Voll first removed captain Sophie Molineux for seven before dismissing Chloe Tryon, Deandra Dottin and Georgia Wareham during a decisive period of the innings.
Wareham had contributed 23 from 19 balls, including three boundaries, but her departure left Melbourne struggling at 117/7 after 17 overs.
The Renegades suffered a dramatic collapse, losing five wickets for just two runs as their total slipped from 117/4 to 119/9.
Voll completed her four overs with excellent figures of 4/26, while Darlington supported her with 2/29.
Samantha Bates was particularly economical, conceding only 20 runs from four overs and taking one wicket.
Despite the collapse, late contributions from Annie Wikman, who remained unbeaten on nine, and Tayla Vlaeminck, who scored 10 not out, helped Melbourne Renegades finish on 138/9.
Georgia Voll Gives Sydney Thunder an Aggressive Start
Chasing 139 for victory, Sydney Thunder made a confident start through Georgia Voll and captain Phoebe Litchfield.
Voll immediately carried her bowling momentum into the batting innings, striking four boundaries and a six in a rapid 25 from 18 balls.
Her attacking approach ensured Thunder reached 32 without loss during the mandatory four-over powerplay.
Tess Flintoff eventually dismissed Voll in the fifth over, but the opening partnership had already established a useful platform.
Litchfield contributed 14 from 17 deliveries before falling to Deandra Dottin, leaving Sydney Thunder at 64/2 in the ninth over.
Although Melbourne had secured two wickets, the visitors remained comfortably positioned in the chase.
Anika Learoyd and Heather Knight Secure Thunder’s Victory
Anika Learoyd then took control of the innings with an impressive 48 from 37 balls.
The right-hander struck nine boundaries and maintained a positive scoring rate while building a crucial partnership with England international Heather Knight.
The pair added 62 runs for the third wicket, taking Thunder from 64/2 to 126/3 and effectively removing any significant pressure from the chase.
Knight played an important supporting role, remaining unbeaten on 29 from 22 deliveries with three fours.
Melbourne briefly interrupted the momentum when Vlaeminck dismissed Learoyd and Laura Harris in the 16th over.
However, Nadine de Klerk quickly settled the contest, striking three boundaries in an unbeaten 12 from just six balls.
Sydney Thunder reached 140/4 in 17 overs, completing a six-wicket victory with 18 deliveries remaining.
Vlaeminck was Melbourne’s most successful bowler with 2/23 from four overs, but Thunder’s balanced performance proved decisive.

Lee continued to attack, but her dismissal in the 11th over proved a major setback.
Kim Garth removed the dangerous opener with Hobart on 108/3, leaving the Hurricanes needing 85 more runs from the remaining 56 deliveries.
Charlie Dean’s Economical Spell Puts Stars in Control
While Hobart’s top order scored aggressively, Melbourne Stars found an important advantage through Charlie Dean’s disciplined bowling.
The England spinner delivered an exceptional spell of 1/13 from four overs, conceding just 3.25 runs per over in a match featuring several expensive bowling figures.
Dean also dismissed Heather Graham for 20 from 15 deliveries, preventing Hobart from building another substantial partnership.
Her ability to restrict scoring proved particularly significant as the Hurricanes attempted to maintain the required run rate.
Nicola Carey kept Hobart’s hopes alive with 32 from 25 balls, striking four boundaries.
However, the Stars continued to take wickets at important moments.
Dani Gibson dismissed Maddy Green for five, while Sutherland returned to remove Carey and Ruth Johnston in the 19th over.
Those late breakthroughs effectively ended Hobart’s chances of completing the chase.
