WBBL 2026: Hobart Hurricanes Sign Ira Aery and Maddy Green Ahead of Title Defence

Defending Women’s Big Bash League champions Hobart Hurricanes have strengthened their squad by signing Australian teenage fast bowler Ira Aery and New Zealand international Maddy Green ahead of WBBL 2026–27.

The Hurricanes confirmed the additions following a series of injury setbacks before their season opener against Melbourne Stars at Junction Oval on October 29.

Ira Aery Joins Hobart Hurricanes as Injury Replacement

Seventeen-year-old Ira Aery has joined Hobart Hurricanes as an injury replacement for Callie Wilson.

The right-arm fast-medium bowler made her senior state debut for Victoria last summer and has represented Australia at Under-19 level.

Aery also featured for Hobart Hurricanes during the recent Women’s T20 Spring Challenge, giving her valuable experience within the team’s setup.

Her rapid development earned her a full Victorian contract for the 2026–27 season.

Maddy Green Replaces Injured Linsey Smith

Experienced New Zealand batter Maddy Green has been recruited following a quadriceps injury to England spinner Linsey Smith.

Smith sustained the injury during training and will undergo scans to determine its severity. The Hurricanes remain hopeful she can return later in the competition.

The squad has already undergone another significant change, with Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu joining after England’s Danni Wyatt-Hodge withdrew through injury.

Hurricanes Head of High Performance Salliann Beams expressed confidence in the team’s depth despite the disrupted preparations.

Meanwhile, experienced all-rounder Heather Graham is set to reach 150 WBBL appearances, becoming only the seventh player to achieve the milestone.

Hobart Hurricanes begin their title defence against Melbourne Stars as they look to build on last season’s championship triumph.
